Major tourist attractions
-
- Great Masurian Lakes District
- Region of countless lakes, paradise for sailors, kayakers and
anglers. The lakes are interconnected by rivers and canals, forming an enormous system of waterways.
- Frombork
- Historical complex of the Cathedral Hill. It’s believed it was here that
Copernicus conducted most of the observations and research for his heliocentric theory.
- Elbląg Canal (Elblag)
- Poland’s longest navigable canal is also the most unusual: it deals with the
100 m difference in water levels by means of a system of five slipways; boats are carried across
dry land on rail-mounted trolleys.
- Gierłoż (Ketrzyn)
- Here was Hitler’s main headquarters during World War II, baptised with
a name of Wolfsschanze or Wolf ’s Lair. Visitors wander around to see destroyed bunkers.
- Święta Lipka (Reszel)
- Surrounded by a cloister, Jesuit baroque church and monastery erected in
the late 17th century. The pride of the church is its sumptuously decorated organ.
- Nidzica
- Rectangular Gothic Teutonic Knights’ castle.
- Olsztyn
- Nicolaus Copernicus lived and worked for a few years in the Gothic castle of
Olsztyn. Other historical buildings include the medieval High Gate, St Jacob’s Church and old
burghers’ houses.
