Voices of nature
If you liked the film „Dances with Wolves”, go to the Bieszczady region, located in south–eastern Poland. It is home to
the largest packs of wolves in Europe. Their fascinating and sometimes frightening howling can be heard during the winter
months (January/February). Imagine the white, endless and rolling landscape under the dark–blue sky dotted with
myriad of stars, and dark silhouettes of wolves yowling towards the full–moon. Recording wolfish howling is also possible
in the Borecka and Knyszyńska Forests.
Stag’s rutting roars can be heard in the Bieszczady Mountains as well as in the Białowieska, Borecka and Knyszyńska Forests
in September and October. If you are lucky you may also see an exciting combat of two mighty males, fighting for the
leadership over a flock of deer. Voices of many animals can be heard and recorded in these forests which constitute an area
known as the Green Lungs of Poland. You can wander through the dense forests for long hours without encountering a soul;
all you will hear is the sough of the trees and birds’ voices, all you will see are the trails of big and small animals. Very
interesting are stays in forester’s lodges. The hosts will show you the most interesting niches and reveal many secrets of
nature. Both the beginners and experienced travellers can find such stays very attractive and return home with many
trophies: pictures of roe–and red–deer, wild boar, raccoon, wild cat and lynx.
