Amidst forests and lakes, along waterways and ravinesThe Lubusz Region offers visitors wonderful forest and a well–developed system of waterways and lakes. The region shares its borders with Germany and cyclists have an opportunity to travel on either side of the Odra River – in either Poland or Germany. The regional administration does a lot to promote tourism through cycling: hundreds of kilometres of cycling trails, which lead from one vantage point to the next, were prepared in the region’s vast expanse of forested land. The most popular centre for cyclists is Sulęcin. Located on the international route R–1, Sulęcin used to belong to the Templars and then to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. Some 300km of cycling trails run around the town and to many places of interests in the region. A beautiful forest trail leads to Krzeszyce and then back along the scenic path beside the Postomia River. Another trail leads to Lubniewice and onto the Janie Lake nature reserve. Visitors can wander through numerous ravines, go to Lubniewsko, Lubiąż and Krajnik lakes and come back to Sulęcin, passing by the Wędrzyńskie Hills. The Sulęcin–Torzym trail (52km) is also a must for cycling enthusiasts. It runs through the territory of the Łagów Landscape Park and gives the traveller a chance to see the splendid castle of the Knights of St John. Sulęcin can be the starting point for cyclists going onto the numerous trails within the region, but other holiday centres also have very good and not expensive accommodation facilities. A large annual gathering of cycling fans is held at Sulęcin in the third decade of September. |
