Established: 1993

Statute:

Biebrza National Park

The park protects Europe's largest natural expanse of low moor peat bogs in the Biebrza river valley (total surface area of 59,223 hectares). The greatest attractions of the park are the splendid, open, high moor landscapes and uncommonly rich wildlife and plant cover. The Biebrza river marshes are worldwide known as a nesting site of many rare European species of water birds and birds of prey (approx. 235 species including 157 nesting birds). In spring, when the Biebrza overflows into its flood plain of several square kilometres, thousands of migratory birds gather here and may be watched from viewing platforms. The Biebrza river valley is also Poland's largest wildlife refuge for elk, wolves, beavers, and otters.
