WROCŁAW – A CITY OF CULTURE AND HISTORY

Wrocław has all the assets of a tourist destination – great location, a mild climate, marvelous historic sites and hospitable residents. It lies in the middle of the Silesian Lowland, where the Oder River branches out to form 12 islands of varying size. Summers here are sunny, but not extremely hot, and winters are not very cold – the average temperature in the hottest month, July, is 17.8°C, and the coldest month, January, is -1.9°C. The most rainy days are in November, and the fewest are in September.


GIFTS AND SOUVENIRS

Silver jewelry, often with precious and decorative stones from Lower Silesia, artistic glassware and crystal glass, ceramic ware from Bolesławiec, Lower Silesian porcelain as well as small stained-glass pictures, wooden toys, traditional T-shirts and other gadgets are all on sale around the city.


MUNICIPAL TRANSPORTATION

There are taxis at taxi stands around the city, but it's cheapest to order a taxi by phone from various radio-taxi services (telephone numbers of reliable taxi services are: 919, 96 62, 96 22, 96 28, 96 67. The drive to the customer is free of charge. Wrocław has a well-developed public transportation network, with plenty of trams and buses. Tickets are available at newsstands, vending machines and, at night and on holidays – from the driver. Tourists staying longer in Wrocław will find it more convenient to buy a one-day or 10- day ticket.


SIGHTSEEING

The most valuable historical buildings, artwork and museums can be found in the Old Town and its environs. They can be visited on foot, and many hotels and most restaurants and shops are within walking distance of the Old Town as well. Wrocław is an extensive city, so you should buy a city map or use a PTTK guide; please inquire at the Tourist Information Centers at 14 Rynek, tel. 344 31 11, or Wrocław Główny railway station, tel. 369 54 97. Cruises down the Oder River are organized in summer, and a great panorama of the city is visible as the boats run along Ostrów Tumski. Boats can also be hired for a banquet on the water, tel. 328 36 18 or 372 76 17. One can also enjoy a ride on old tramways Baba Jaga (tel. 357 72 34) or Jaś i Małgosia (tel. 343 77 24), and on an open bus Fredruś tel. 343 77 24).
