Sopot's history is much less turbulent than that of Gdansk. This town has a colour of its own, too. It is both a holiday centre and a spa from the turn of the 19th century: it has retained a number of original buildings. Sanatoria, hotels and boarding houses have found a perfect setting among the green trees of the park. Sopot's five hundred metre long wooden pier is well worth a stroll. Sopot hosts a number of various events including sailing races, tennis tournaments, horse races and a world - wide famous International Song Festival organised in the greenery of the Forest Opera. Night life with many splendid cafes, night clubs and gambling centres including one of Europe's oldest "Casino Sopot" (situated in Grand Hotel) create the atmosphere of the place recognised as the Riviera of the North.
