Gdynia is the youngest of the Tri-City sisters. Until 1921 it was a tiny Kashubian fishing village. The decision about the construction of Gdynia was taken in order to make Poland independent of the Free City of Gdansk's maritime services. The port developed along with the town for the subsequent fifteen years. It was the greatest achievement of the inter-war Poland in the years 1924-1939. In September 1939 the town possessed a modern harbour with fully equipped hinterland. After World War II the damages were very quickly repaired and the harbour continued to grow together with the ship - building industry. Today Gdynia has taken over the role of a trading centre.
